The Trickster: Tricking us Into Running Like The Flash

By: General Chris Innis

This week The Flash will meet a new enemy, and he is full of tricks!

The Trickster first debuted in 1960 in the 1st series of Flash #113. He is a maniacal psychopath and spends his time fighting with The Flash, using joke-based and gadget type devices as weapons. You could say he is to Flash, what the Joker is to Batman. One notable gadget in his possession is a pair of shoes that allow him to run through the air or, "fly" through the air, for up to 10 hours. The Trickster was rebooted in April 2002 by Geoff Johns in Flash (2nd series) #183.

Like a lot of comic book characters, there have been a couple different incarnations of The Trickster. Giovanni Giuseppe originally used a stage name, James Jesse, while acting as a con man and criminal who used his gag gadgets to aid his life of crime. After many battles with The Flash, and the eventual death of Barry Allen, Trickster moved to California to expand his criminal reach. After a stint in Hell, helping Captain Marvel defeat Neron, he decided to use his abilities for good, as he dare to never return to Hell. Years down the road, a young man by the name of Axel Walker stole all of James Jess's gadgets, and took over the moniker of The Trickster. Both men were part of The Rouges, with Jesse eventually working with the FBI.

Throughout the years of comic stories, The Trickster has appeared in various other mediums, to include video games, and live action T.V. shows. For instance in the first series of The Flash (1990 - 1991), he was portrayed on-screen by Mark Hamill, along

with his sidekick, Prank. Hamill also voiced Trickster in DC's animated Justice League Unlimited, as well as, providing the voice for the Joker in several video games and T.V. shows. Now, 24 years later, Mark Hamill is reprising his role as The Trickster on the CW's The Flash, starring Grant Gustin as our hero. Further, we know that CW's The Flash will also, at some point, introduce us to Axel Walker, the second Trickster, who will be played by Devon Graye.

While there is definitely more information on The Trickster out there, I wouldn't want to spoil any potential plot points that may be used in either The Flash series, or any DC project. And while The Trickster may not be as well known as some other villains, such as The Joker, he is definitely a fun character to follow, and I'm positive that Mark Hamill will absolutely KILL as The Trickster.
