The Marvel Universe, as we have known it since 1961, is ending.
Yes, my nerd friends, you read that right.
Now the Secret Wars name carries a lot of history with Marvel. The original Secret Wars mini-series was one of the first epic crossover comics. And though the name has been reused for sequels, spinoffs, and other comics that don't have any direct connection to the original, the history it provides is legend. So why bring it back again only to shatter the marvel universes so many know and love? Well during a live "Secret Wars Kick-Off" press event at New York City's Midtown Comics, Marvel Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso and Senior Vice President of Publishing and Executive Editor Tom Brevoort confirmed that the upcoming eight-issue limited series Secret Wars will represent the end of both the Marvel Universe and the Ultimate Universe.
They further went on to say that the mainstream Marvel Universe and Ultimate Universe would actually "smash together" during the upcoming Secret Wars crossover event. Alonso and Brevoort went on to further elaborate that, by the time that Secret Wars #1 hits the stands in May, every world in Marvel's multiverse will be destroyed, with pieces of each forming “Battleworld”,which will be the staging ground for the Secret Wars storyline. "Once Secret Wars #1 hits stands, there is no Marvel Universe, Ultimate Universe, or any other. It's all Battleworld," Brevoort said.
We also know thanks to the press release, that the Marvel Universe, in post-Secret Wars, will be an all new world combining elements of not just of the Ultimate Universe and the mainstream Marvel Universe, but possibly bits and pieces of other worlds as well as being under the name of "All-New Marvel." "The Marvel Universe will be Battleworld, and every single piece of those worlds will be the building blocks for that universe” said Alonso. They also added that all the universes represented in "Battleworld" will have "legs" moving forward within the series. It was also said that anything will be possible, they even teased the possibility of bringing back old characters or even resurrecting them during or post Secret Wars. So this tease alone gives a huge weight to what the potential of the series and what is to come both during and post-Secret Wars, whether it be a new structured universe or one that is beyond limitation.
Many readers and fans are wondering where this leaves so many storylines and their characters the answer to that is unknown. Only those involved in the Secret Wars crossover project will be privy to the information, and trust me they’re not telling. All that readers can hope for is that this crossover event leads to new and intriguing storylines that involves some if not all of our favorite Marvel characters. This blogger is looking with one eye open towards these Secret Wars. It is new and different but my only concern lies in what has been built within the Marvel Universe and the Ultimate Universe and what will be built during and after the Secret Wars series.
